When following any fat burning diet it is really fundamental that you be familiar with your BMR. BMR stands for Basal Metabolic Rate. The basal metabolic rate is the quantity of energy or calories which you use up at rest. Another more ordinary title for Basal Metabolic Rate is metabolism. Your metabolism incorporates functions of your body such as breathing, digesting food and circulation. Each person's metabolism is unique to their own physical makeup and their own physical practice.

Research conducted in 1992 and 1997 indicated that your degree of aerobic fitness doesn't have any interconnection to your BMR level. Anerobic exercise, such as weight lifting, leads to your body developing more muscle mass which is fat free and uses more energy. You can build up your metabolism through weight training and building additional lean body mass.

Why Is It Essential To Know Your BMR?

By knowing your BMR you know how many calories your body burns through while at rest. While following any fat burning diet you must never reduce your daily calorie intake too far beneath what your body needs to carry on, otherwise the starvation reaction will kick in and you will no longer be burning fat, but muscle. Knowing your BMR allows you to modify your daily calorie intake so you have a defecit to lose fat and you will burn fat, but permitting you to evade going too low that you end up starting the starvation reaction in your body. If you have achieved your weight loss goals, being familiar with your BMR allows you to design a nutritional plan in line with the number of calories your body needs to remain alive and so you can look after your current weight.

The volume of calories your body burns each day is named your TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure). Your TDEE is your BMR then multiplied by an activity factor which adds in an allowance for the quantity of physical activity you do. TDEE is additionally known as your "maintenance level". Being familiar with your maintenance level will give you a opening reference point from which to set in motion your fat burning diet. Caloric consumption can vary widely and is much higher for athletes or markedly active folks

How Do You Calculate Your BMR?

There are a few formulas which can be used to calculate BMR.

I will detail 2 formulas here:

The Harris-Benedict Formula (based on total body weight)

This formula uses height, weight, age, and sex to figure out basal metabolic rate (BMR). The only thing this formula does not take into account is lean body mass and so it can be inacurrate in the very muscular or the very fat.

Men: BMR = 66 + (13.7 X wt in kg) + (5 X ht in cm) - (6.8 X age in years)

Women: BMR = 655 + (9.6 X wt in kg) + (1.8 X ht in cm) - (4.7 X age in years)

Example

I am a 33 year old woman who weighs 57kg and I am 168cm tall.

BMR = 655 + (9.6 x 57) + (1.8 x 168) - (4.7 x 33) = 655 + 547.2 + 302.4 - 155.1 = 1349 calories per day

To find your TDEE, multiply your BMR by an activity factor which suits you from the table below:

Sedentary = BMR X 1.2 (little or no exercise, desk job)

Lightly active = BMR X 1.375 (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/wk)

Moderately active = BMR X 1.55 (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/wk)

Very active = BMR X 1.725 (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days/wk)

Extra Active = BMR X 1.9 (hard daily exercise/sports & physical job or 2X day training, i.e marathon, contest etc.)

So if from the above I am lightly active then my TDEE would be 1349 x 1.375 = 1854 calories per day

Katch-McArdle formula (BMR based on lean body weight)

If you know your body fat percentage and therefore your lean body mass, you can use the most definite BMR formula. This formula takes into account lean mass and therefore is more conclusive. The Harris Benedict equation has separate formulas for men and women because men generally have a higher LBM and this is factored into the men's formula. Since the Katch-McArdle formula accounts for LBM, this single formula applies to both men and women.

BMR = 370 + (21.6 X lean mass in kg)

Example:

You weigh 57kg

Your body fat percentage is 27%

Your lean mass is 41.61kg

Your BMR = 370 + (21.6 X 41.61) = 1268 calories

To determine TDEE from BMR, you simply multiply BMR by the activity multiplier:

Example:

Your BMR is 1268 calories

Your activity level is moderately active (work out 3-4 times per week)

Your activity factor is 1.55

Your TDEE = 1.55 X 1268 = 1965 calories

You can do this by changing the number of times you eat per day. A lot of people feel they need to eat less often but that actually has the reverse effect you want on your metabolism. Eating less often slows your metabolism because the longer the time between meals, the more your body wants to store energy rather than burn it. Eating more often keeps your metabolism burning faster all day. Now that DOES NOT mean eating more calories. You just want to spread the calories out more throughout the day. A rough example would be someone trying to eat 1800 calories per day. Instead of eating 3 meals of 600 calories each, you would try to eat 6 meals of 300 calories each.

Anaerobic exercises are those that focus more on strength and muscle building rather than endurance. How Many Calories Should You Burn for Weight Loss

If you depend on classic aerobic cardio for weight loss, you probably spend 30 minutes on a machine trying to burn a set number of calories. But does that work? Does burning 500 calories per day cause you to lose 1 pound of fat per week?

Well, according to science, it should. But if it did, you probably wouldn't still be reading this article.

I used to write a column on fat loss myths for Men's Fitness magazine. Here's a classic weight loss topic I covered.

Myth: I need to burn 500 calories each workout to lose fat.

Truth:
Possibly one of the worst inventions for fat loss was the calorie-counting monitor on treadmills, elliptical machines, and stairmasters.

Because of these, millions of men and women now obsess about the number of calories burned per session. You've probably even been one of those people, watching it creep up ever so slowly during a slow-cardio session. All the while knowing that you can wipe out a 30-minute, 300-calorie treadmill session with one fell swoop of the Krispy Kreme hand.

Too many people are brainwashed into thinking that if they don't burn 300-500 calories per session, then they won't lose fat. After all, that is what you've been told time and time again in those fluffy fitness/fashion magazines.

The problems with this approach to fat loss are numerous. First off, it's difficult to say if the calorie counters are even accurate. A story on CBS news showed that cardio machines overestimate calorie burning by up to 20%.

Next, depending on slow cardio for advanced fat loss is relatively useless and at the very least, inefficient. It takes a long time for you to burn a lot of calories and one study showed that men who only used cardio training for weight loss ended up with a reduced resting metabolism. You are basically undoing the calorie burning by depending only on cardio. On the other hand, guys in the same study that used strength training didn't suffer a reduced metabolic rate.

So what is the solution to burning fat in a faster, more efficient method? The answer is to use strength and interval training to burn fewer calories in less exercise time, but with a more intense form of exercise.

Your body will burn more calories after exercise (when you use intervals) than it does after you do slow cardio and your metabolism will stay high. Some experts refer to this as the afterburn effect. How do you do intervals? Well, you could sprint for 30 seconds and rest for 90 seconds and repeat that for 6 sets - using the bike preferably or treadmill if you are experienced with it.

Within that short time frame the intervals will cause your muscles to go crazy with activity (I call it a metabolic turbulence). This crazy metabolism boost causes lots of calorie burning after exercise to get your body back to normal. The result is you would end up burning more fat and more calories in the post-exercise period as your body tries to get things under control.

Now there is one time where you'd want to count calories, but that is when you are counting up and determining how many calories you eat per day. Again, you can wipe out an entire workout's work in less than a minute simply by eating garbage. Without some structure and discipline to your nutrition, there is nothing that even my programs can do to help you lose fat.

So exercise nutrition control and interval training. These are the two anti-calorie counting methods that will help you lose fat and get lean.

This might sound contradictory, but what really happens is that the body will not hold on to excess water once you start drinking enough of it.

Try to increase the water intake by a few glasses more than what you are drinking now. But don't go overboard and stay within reasonable limits. Also remember that juices etc. do not count - you really need to drink water. This can be a quick easy way to lose weight.

2. Replace your snacks

This is another healthy, quick way to lose weight. Most of us are in the habit of eating a lot of snacks in between meals. And many times these snacks are junk food which have too many calories and no real nutrition.

The best way to lose weight fast would be to just quit this habit of eating useless snacks. But having said this, it can be difficult for someone to completely break this habit all at once.

So what you can do is at least replace the snacks with some better ones which are more nutritious and low in calories. Some of the best foods for this purpose are apples, cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes, cabbage, bananas etc.

Keep these handy in the fridge so that whenever you feel like munching you can have these instead of your potato chips, or other fried items etc. This is really a cool and quick way to lose weight easily and in a healthy manner.

3. Eat slowly

If you want to lose weight then get into the habit of taking smaller bites and munching them thoroughly. You will avoid overeating, prevent gas problems and also tend to stay slim by eating slowly.

It has been found that people who eat slowly by taking smaller bites and chewing the food more, they tend to stay slim when compared to those who eat fast.

It is said that since we have about 32 teeth, we also need to chew each morsel of food atleast 30-50 times before swallowing. Try this out and you may soon realize how effective it is and really one of the fast ways to lose weight easily.

4. Walk for 30 minutes each day

Shall I tell another quick way to healthy weight loss? Do brisk walking for just 30 minutes a day.

I don't think that it is difficult at all to walk for 30 minutes each day. Walking is excellent for our body as it exercises all parts of the body.

Sparing 30 minutes everyday for some brisk walking should not be a problem at all for most people. You can even take somebody with you for the walk so that you don't have to do it alone.

The Effective Way to Permanent and Fast Weight Loss:

The above tips can be really effective but only if you follow them consistently and make them a part of your life. These are wonderful for your general fitness and can also provide a quick way to lose weight naturally and easily.
